Frequently Asked
HVAC insurance questions, answered.
What does HVAC contractor insurance typically cost?
Premium depends on payroll, gross receipts, residential vs. commercial mix, refrigerant handling volume, fleet size, and ex-mod factor. New-construction install work prices differently than service-and-repair. Final cost is subject to underwriting and the carriers writing HVAC class in your state.
Do I need refrigerant pollution coverage?
Yes. The pollution exclusion on a standard CGL form will deny refrigerant release claims, even from a routine recovery mistake on a residential job. A contractors-pollution endorsement or standalone pollution policy is the right placement, especially as EPA enforcement on R-410A and the A2L transition picks up. Without it, you're personally on the hook for the cleanup.
What's the right WC class code for HVAC techs?
Most HVAC field work falls under NCCI 5537 (heating, ventilation, AC — installation, service, and repair) with clerical split out to 8810. Sheet-metal-only fabrication may pull into 3066, and new-construction-only installers sometimes split to 5538. Misclassification at policy issue is the most common reason HVAC premium gets re-rated at audit.
What policies does an HVAC contractor need?
A typical HVAC program includes Workers Compensation, General Liability with completed-operations, Tools and Equipment, Hired and Non-Owned Auto for service-call vehicles, Pollution Liability for refrigerant exposure, and Inland Marine for equipment in transit. Coverage availability is subject to underwriting.
How fast can I get a Certificate of Insurance for a property manager or GC?
Standard ACORD 25 certificates issue in seconds through the portal, ChatGPT, Claude, Slack, email, or phone. Custom holder language (additional insured, waiver of subrogation, primary and non-contributory) is typically produced within minutes after a licensed broker confirms the wording. There is no per-COI fee.
How does Delegance reduce broker commissions?
Routine work — intake, COIs, endorsements, policy Q&A, renewal triage — runs through Orin, our insurance-specialized language model. Licensed brokers focus on judgment work like carrier selection, complex coverage, and claim advocacy. Across the customer base we average a 60 percent reduction in broker commission cost versus a typical commercial brokerage. That is an average, not a guarantee.
